1ère partieThe predominant uses of the French conditional are often described as an oposition between the modal use (in apodoses), on the one hand, and the temporal use of the conditional, on the other (to express future in the past, in indirect speech). One of the questions raised in this first part of the book is: how can these two uses of the conditional be based on just one form? Another question is: is this distinction useful for the translator (from French into English)? Not very useful, actually, as both uses (1/ apodosis 2/ future anticipation) can coexist in the same context: Writing in the daily La Croix on October 9, Robert B [...] explained that France would formally have to renounce the entire convention if it wanted to bring the death penalty back. (The Guardian Weekly) From the etymon I derive the archetype of the French conditional, specialised in the expression of predestination (Henri IV, who was to be assassinated in 1610, nevertheless had the time to improve the financial health of the country), i.e. of a vitualis propositional content, non-verifiable from the prospective standpoint it is related to, but verifiable and certain for the main utterer. Pertinent data are that the conditional first expressed certainty, and that the conditional as a tense was not derived from the future tense and that both tenses developped following the pattern provided by the etymon of the conditional. The morphemes of the conditional are not those of the future and the imperfect, mais those of the infinitive (morpheme -R- ) and the imperfect of 'avoir' (morpheme -ais).On décrit souvent les emplois dominants du conditionnel en opposant " conditionnel proprement dit " et " futur dans le passé ". Comment le " conditionnel " peut-il devenir " futur dans le passé " ? Cette distinction est-elle éclairante pour le traducteur ? Assez peu, en définitive, puisque ces deux emplois, réunis dans l'exemple suivant, se superposent au lieu de s'opposer : Dans La Croix du 9 octobre, M. Robert Badinter [...] avait expliqué la nécessité dans laquelle serait la France de dénoncer la convention si elle souhaitait rétablir la peine de mort. (Le Monde) La recherche de l'étymon aboutira à un archétype, que l'on appellera conditionnel de prédestination (Henri IV, qui serait assassiné en 1610, eut néanmoins le temps d'assainir les finances du pays), spécialisé dans l'expression d'un destin, c'est-à-dire d'un virtuel, non vérifiable au regard du repère - interne à l'énoncé - auquel il se rattache, mais vérifié et attesté au regard de l'énonciateur principal. On gardera comme critères pertinents que le conditionnel a commencé par exprimer le certain, et que le conditionnel n'est pas dérivé du futur (ce serait plutôt le contraire mais ce qui importe, c'est que l'un et l'autre se sont développés sur le même modèle). Et donc que les morphèmes caractéristiques du conditionnel ne sont pas ceux du futur et de l'imparfait, mais ceux de l'infinitif (morphème -R- ) et de l'imparfait (morphème -ais).
